How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters in Oregon?

The second cleaning should happen in late spring. Spring winds blow seeds, blossoms, and small twigs onto your roof. These easily wash down into the gutters and create dense clogs right before the summer dry season. Leaving this debris sitting in the metal channels all summer can cause rust and permanent damage.

When You Need More Frequent Cleaning

The twice-a-year rule is a baseline. Many properties in our area require three or even four cleanings a year based on their surroundings.

If you have large evergreen trees near your house, you are dealing with a constant shedding of pine needles. Unlike broad leaves, pine needles drop year-round. They slip right past many types of gutter guards and form a dense, heavy sludge in the bottom of the channel. If your roof is shaded by fir or pine trees, you should check your gutters every three months.

Signs Your Gutters Are Clogged Right Now

You do not always have to climb a ladder to know your gutters need attention. Your house will usually tell you when there is a problem. Look for water spilling over the edges during a rainstorm. This means the downspout is entirely blocked.

Another clear sign is sagging metal. Wet leaves and pine needles are incredibly heavy. When they fill a gutter, the weight pulls the metal away from the fascia board. You might also notice dark streaks running down your exterior siding, or small plants literally sprouting out of the gutters. If you see any of these signs, you need to act quickly.
