Why Is My Roof Turning Black in the Pacific Northwest?

Those Black Streaks Are Not Dirt
The dark stains on your roof are actually a living organism. It is a type of blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. This algae travels through the air as spores. When the wind blows, these spores land on your roof and look for a place to grow.
They love asphalt shingles because modern shingles contain limestone filler. The algae literally eats the limestone to survive. As the colony grows and feeds on your roof, it develops a dark, hardened outer coating to protect itself from the sun. That dark coating is the black streak you see from the driveway.
Why It Thrives in Oregon
The Pacific Northwest is the perfect environment for roof algae. Gloeocapsa magma needs moisture and shade to spread. Our long, rainy winters and damp spring mornings provide all the water it could ever need.
You will usually notice the stains are much worse on the north and west sides of your house. Those areas get less direct sunlight. The shingles stay damp longer, giving the algae plenty of time to multiply. Once it takes hold, it traps even more moisture against the roof surface. This creates a breeding ground for heavier moss and lichen to grow later on.
The Danger of DIY Cleaning
When people see a dirty surface, their first instinct is to blast it with water. This is a massive mistake for asphalt roofs.
Using a high-pressure washer on your roof will strip the protective granules right off the shingles. Those tiny gravel pieces reflect UV rays and protect the waterproof asphalt layer underneath. If you blast them away, you ruin the lifespan of the roof and void the manufacturer warranty. You might wash the black streaks away, but you will need a roof replacement years earlier than planned.
